Indonesian punk band Motives released its second single, post its members' decision to reunite after their twenty years of hiatus. This release follows its first single Slavery last June. The single, titled Lockdown Love, captures the changing relationships between people during the pandemic. Musically, Lockdown Love still displays the characteristics of Motives as a unit that carries punk music from the 70's. A little different from the previous single, this song gives plenty of power pop vibes and mods revival. Sweet melodies in the guitar hook and vocals are wrapped in distortions and lively bass as well as pounding drum beats.
This song reminds us that punk music is not always synonymous with raw music which is consid- ered unfriendly for most ears. Themes taken in the lyrics are also more popular and relevant to our present lives. This song explores the relationship between couples during the pandemic. In a wider sense, Lockdown Love also talks about our longing for the things we love, such as coming to concerts and enjoying live music, even working face-to-face freely, activities that are now amputat- ed by circumstances.
Lockdown Love is released on September 4, 2021 on World Sexual Health Day. An article on the Journal of Medical Internet Research highlights the impact of the pandemic on sexual health, states that the pandemic resulted in reduced sexual desire and frequency of sexual intercourse. This research also reports the deterioration of relationships between partners during the pandemic. This proves that the pandemic does not only affect the lives of couples who aren't living together, but also those who live at the same home. That's the reality of Lockdown Love.
The two-minute and 33-second song can now be listened to on various digital music platforms and downloaded at
motivesid.bandcamp.com. The physical format is to be released soon.
